Marketing mistakes can be prevented.  However, no matter how big of a brand you are the harder you fall if you make these 10 marketing mistakes.

The worst part about marketing mistakes is that as business owners we may not even be aware of them.

Here are my top 10 marketing mistakes I see small businesses doing.

Worst Marketing Mistakes #1 Ignoring Video

Arguably the most important one at this moment is ignoring video.  You may think that you’ve done great so far without video. But as our attention spans get shorter and shorter an eye-popping image with great copy just won’t cut it.

Conversely, if you are trying to run a profitable business online video increases lead generation by 66%. Don’t believe me check out these incredible stats from several studies.  Quite frankly, video sells more!

Worst Marketing Mistakes #2 Poor Content Quality

At this point my face is red from all the palm to face moments I have when I am auditing social sites.  I’m sure you’ve heard this plenty of times, quality over content.

Quality is just not providing value its also in production of the content itself.  Clients tell me they are sharing valuable content and truthfully they are. But, they don’t take time to create high quality images that are not blurry, that are within their brand style, and are scroll stopping!

The opposite is also true some have amazing images and videos but no value and focus on hard selling and promotion.

Worst Marketing Mistakes #3 Selling Too Soon/Too Hard

Which leads me to the point of hard selling and over promotion.  Some business owners are focused on over promotion of their products and services that you cue in the barf emoji.

We get so focused on promoting and pushing ourselves onto our audience that when we lose them we are left wondering why.  This baffles me when speaking to potential clients that they can’t do that. Think of your business as a dating game between you and the person of your dreams.

Take time to nurture the relationship. Just like there is a proper flow to dating, selling also has its proper flow. The sales flow includes finding the right audience, creating interest, educating your prospect, and finally closing the sale.

Worst Marketing Mistakes #4 Not Building An Email List

Working with a new client and going over their big instagram launch I discover they have no email list.  They run a small women’s clothing retailer about an hour away from Houston.

Here’s the problem. First, if they were to lose their 1000 followers on Facebook someday how would then drive traffic into their store when they get new seasonal items.  What about sales? Secondly, how would you continue to nurture a relationship with someone who happened to stumble upon your shop and bought some items?

Lastly, what if you had Kim Kardashian coming to your shop and you couldn’t share this on social media.  How would you reach your clients? Email marketing continues to be one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to market your business.

Worst Marketing Mistakes #5 Not Niching Down

You can’t viably market to a group that is broadly defined. When you market to a broad audience that is too large you will have lower effectiveness. For instance, if you are targeting females between the age of 18-25 you’ll be wasting your financial resources and your time.

Your target audience is not well defined. You must have a more prominent core interest. Rather than showcasing to females between the age of 18-25, you have to find out about your target demographic.

  • What are their leisure activities?
  • Where do they hang out?
  • Who do they look forward to?
  • What are their feelings of trepidation and desires?
  • What is their degree of training?
  • What is their monthly income?
  • Where do they live?
  • How would they settle on purchasing choices?

Worst Marketing Mistakes #6 Going Wide Instead of Deep

Likewise, as with your target market, marketing should also go deep instead of broad.  Because there are a hundred unique ways you could advertise your business it doesn’t imply that you should attempt them all in the meantime. Concentrate on explicit promoting strategies. At that point, scale up the showcasing that works.

Worst Marketing Mistakes #7 Ignoring Marketing Results

I keep posting quotes but they don’t attract anyone.  How about those industry-specific memes? It’s one thing to realize that your business income has gone up over the most recent months.

Yet, do you realize what promoting strategy caused the increase? Businesses that succeed are superb at tracking their marketing efforts & activities.  They are aware of which pieces of content created traction, leads, and online influence. This is not a game of darts in hopes you make the target. Marketing is a game of precision much like chess!

Worst Marketing Mistakes #8 Forgetting to A/B Test

You can A/B test numerous parts of your marketing activities. You can begin by A/B testing your content, at that point proceed onward to testing your promotions. A/B test your email headlines, blog entry titles, or the viability of your pictures. When you incorporate A/B testing in your marketing, you adopt the quantifiable strategy rather than the attempt and trust in whatever content you created in under 5 minutes..

Worst Marketing Mistakes #9 Forgetting To Monitor The Competition

We all have competitors.  Although, I’m a huge proponent in staying in your lane and not coveting what your competitors are doing.  Fact is, the most successful brands know everything about their competition.

Why? Observing your competitors helps you gain insight into how they market to similar/like audiences.  Insight also includes what is working for them. Go ahead and stalk their posts, sign up for their emails and research what marketing activities are most successful.

Then use that to inspire your own content creating and marketing tactics.  And the number one reason to know everything about your competition is to learn from their marketing mistakes.

Worst Marketing Mistakes #10 Not Believing In Your Own Brand

Finally, often times I talk to clients and they just don’t believe in their brand.  I’m in a women helping women entrepreneurs group on facebook. The #1 reason I have seen to why are you doing what you are doing is …

I want to make money to stay at home and not have to do work every day.  Wrong! Here’s my why. I want to help business owners to be successful in their marketing efforts and increase their revenue.

Plain and simple. I would much rather be on a one on one holding a solopreneurs hand through the marketing process than making money and hanging out at home.
