If only every call to action (CTA) that read like this were true.  We would all be millionaires. But effective CTA on Instagram needs to be just as flashy, fun, and fabulous as well as clear. This week on the Instagram for Business Series it’s all about CTA for Instagram.

What is a CTA for Instagram?

A CTA is what you want your target audience to do for you. For example, my CTA for Instagram can range from the double tap if you like to drop your favorite emoji.  On Instagram, you have to have specific and clear CTAs. This can be done by using active language in your captions.

What is Active Language?

Active language is the ability to write in a way that uses fewer words, making the writing clear and effective. But why is it so important, and more importantly, how can I use it in Calls To Action on Instagram?

Here is why you need to use active language:

  1. It engages the audience
  2. It makes copy easier to read for the audience especially for those whose first language is not English.
  3. It persuades! The sole purpose of your content is to prompt your audience to take action either by doing business with your company or sharing your content. By using action verbs and active language your copy is more engaging and persuasive
  4. Active language creates momentum that keeps your audience reading and scrolling to the end without leaving your content.
  5. Finally, it connects.  All content provides information.  When you use active language that information is easy to digest, clear, and to the point allowing your audience to connect with you faster.

How to active language in CTA for Instagram?

First, you need to use strong command verbs in your CTA in the captions.  What are the strong command verbs you ask? Words such as buy, click, order, shop, tap, are all strong command verbs.

Next, your strong command verbs should be followed with equally strong emotion.  Words like now, get, today are emotions that prompt urgency.  Your job is to get your audience to do exactly what you want them to do now.  See my sense of urgency for you.

You also need to give the audience a reason to.  A reason to take the action you want.  So what’s in it for them?  What do you want them to do? You can’t assume your followers know what you want them to do. Your picture and capture may be amazing but without a strong call to action on Instagram, your audience has no clue what to do with your content other than to keep swiping.

Lead your audience with a CTA on Instagram. Is it like your post, comment, share your post, click on your profile link? You have to ask them to do it.  Always think of what is in it for them.

What else should I include in my CTA on Instagram?

Emojis!  Emojis draw attention to your call-call-to-action. They also add personality to your messaging.  They also make CTAs more inviting.  Who doesn’t love a good emoji!

Don’t forget to use statements such as you and your.  For example, sign up now and start increasing your followers.  I also tend to capitalize my CTA on Instagram, so it stands out and apart from the rest of my caption.

Likewise, keep the wording of your CTA on Instagram on brand.  You don’t want to sound pushy, robotic, or desperately fake.  Make sure your CTA sounds like the personality of your brand or yourself.

The next post will be all about crafting the perfect caption.  We will revisit examples of the perfect CTA on Instagram and the perfect on-brand message so that each caption sounds just like you.

This week begin looking at the captions of those who you follow.  Take note of what you like, what captions didn’t sound authentic, and start jotting down what you want to sound like on Instagram.
