What is a HASHTAG?

Invented by Chris Messina in 2007, the hashtag or previously called the octothorpe, is a way to index related posts on Twitter together.

Similarly, the hashtag works the same way across all social platforms. The hashtag archived and groups related posts under the specific octothorpe followed by the name. Basic Hashtag Rules

  • They always start with # but they won’t work if you use spaces, punctuation, or symbols.
  • Your social accounts should be public. Otherwise, the content you hashtag will only be seen by your immediate followers.
  • Don’t use too many words together. The best hashtags tend to be relatively short and easy to remember. But longer tailed hashtags work best for small niches.
  • Use relevant and specific hashtags. If it is too broad, your content is harder to find. The point is to get your post viewed by non-followers.
  • Limit the number of hashtags you use.  More is not best but follow each social platform hashtag rules.

Why Use Hashtags?

They make your content more interesting. A hashtag immediately catches the audience’s attention. Especially on platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Hashtags make your posts visible in conversations related to the topic. Increased visibility lead to greater engagement, boosting your business’s social media engagement through likes, shares, comments, and new followers.

They can also build your brand and community. Take for instance the #BeASocialBoss. I use it across all my social platforms as a way to brand my business. However, on LinkedIn, I use it as a follow topic. You can follow all my content and stay in the know of all my posts just by following the hashtag #BeASocialBoss. It’s an easy way to gain followers on LinkedIn.

It’s a way to show participation and awareness of social issues. Using a hashtag that’s connected to a social issue is a way to show that your business stands behind an important cause or issue.

Hashtags add context to your posts and help your target audience find you!

What Hashtags Should I Use For My Business?

When choosing hashtags keep in mind who is looking for your type of business. For example, my audience may be looking for a marketing coach or a social media manager. I would use hashtags like #HoustonSocialMediaManager or #HoustonMarketingCoach because that is what they would search if they were looking for me.

Always think of your audience first. If my potential client was looking for me what would they type in the search field?

Don’t forget to do a little research on hashtags that are specific to your brand, your industry and your audience.

Consequently, don’t forget your competition. Start by gathering intel about your competitors and any relevant influencers within your brand’s industry and niche.

Then take note of all hashtags they use most often and how they are using them in each of their posts. In doing this you learn how your competitors are engaging with your shared target audience and which hahstags they tend to use.
